@ferrett78 Well, yes, accuracy?.. The Sun has been in the dark section of the MW at solstice for 10 years now, and will be for another 10. Is the exact centering on the 2012 solstice? ‘Depends upon how you see the dark section. The Mayan would have killed for our knowledge of the sky and our understandings of the dark sections. It’s pathetic that people salivate over silly old stories from primitive-minded groups instead of reading readily available modern information.
@jerbiebarb My first post was mainly just commenting that the video itself poses the question of “how could the Maya predict 26k years into the future” after going into detail about it being a cycle. I would suggest the Maya deduced that it was a cycle from their observations. So prediction isnt that amazing really (you just extrapolate the data you have). Im just amazed at the accuracy of their observations!
@jerbiebarb Yeah, according to Sagan, the folklore of the Dogon wasnt actually recorded until a few years after this. Plenty of time for other Europeans that knew about Sirius B to mention it to the Dogon. As you suggest, Sirius A probably already had some kind of superstitions attached to it, and they naturally would add this new information to an existing legend/tale.
@jerbiebarb For sure. I never thought there was anything mysterious. I’m just amazed that an ancient culture was able to make measurements that accurate with nothing but the naked eye. Their calendar really is an amazing achievement, but has nothing to do with the end of the world, or other supernatural events
@ferrett78 They didn’t discern a cycle. They had decades of positions for the Sun at solstice and they estimated when it would reach the dark spot in the Milky Way. There’s nothing mysterious here. They didn’t know what the MW was or the dark spot or how far away anything was. They just looked and looked for magical alignments and ‘signs’. The stories came later, theirs and the exaggerations of our modern book sellers’!
@ferrett78 Yes, Sirius is the brightest star, it’s so nearby, so most cultures already watched it. Sirius B was discovered back in1862. Europeans were amazed that Dogon had a small dark ‘guide’ for Sirius. But now we know that there might be a second dwarf Sirius C, because of two lines of evidence. With the Dogon, it’s all folktales and coincidence. Sad to say..
@jerbiebarb I believe Carl Sagan discusses that in “Broca’s Brain”. He actually suggests that the Europeans who catalogued the tribal beliefs in that area arrived a couple years after the discovery of Sirius B had been news in Europe, and that the Dogon people had contact with other Europeans during those few years. The Dogon could then have added some “scientific details” gathered from these travellers to an existing legend.
After going to great lengths to describe a 26k year cycle, they ask “How could the Maya predict 26k years into the future…?”.
ahhh, Hint: It’s a cycle. Cycle’s repeat. Once you figure out it’s a cycle, the predicting part is easy.
How they were able to make naked eye measurements so precise that they were able to discern such a cycle is a far more interesting question to me.
@damaen668 That was the Dogon. And it was in their tribal stories that they had stars with small dark ‘guides’, later depicted in their elaborate headdresses. But they didn’t have a modern concept of what a star was until European explorers encountered them and showed them planets through small telescopes in the late 1800s. This case has been expanded by the authors of books. Sirius is the brightest star, all cultures have represented it as special but It’s all imagination.
@jerbiebarb actually the Mayans knew alot about the stars that we have onlt just recently discovered ourselves.
Example: There is a star relatively close to us called Serious A. It was only till approx. 50 yrs ago that we found out the it had a smaller star (Serious B) that orbited around it.
Yet the Mayans knew about it and even know the exact way that Serious B orbited around it.
They were incredibly more advanced than what most ppl are willing to admit
@Karma01010
Well, the Milky Way has already lined up like that for many years now (since 1998?), but their prediction that our sun will be engulfed or regenerated (either / or) by the Dark Nebula is what Mayan were fixated upon.
They obviously didn’t know what the massive center of a galaxy was, or even what a galaxy was. Nobody knew that until 1940, because you need good telescopes and a lot of observations.
the store is about the rise of the black nation who lost his head or mind ! under white people in America now it’s time that blacks restore their mind ! the sun will do what it must do to rid the world of evil people !
we r kept in the dark, u dont actually believe the crap that they have been telling us about his history, if it dont fix their bullshit, its a mystery, then why do people just think, mystery? o thats ok then, look into coral castle and think about stone henge the pyramids and the monolith in south america, do your own thinking, dont believe nothing, if it dont add, when u think about it, oyeah prof bullshit, aint right just because he teaches in university,
face it, the secret societies now whats happening, those who got almost all of the scrolls in alexandria, the ancient knowledge around the world is underground, me personally i believe its a change in the vibration field, think that vibration, string theory etc is crap, open ur mind and look into quantum physical science, oyeah, dont be scared to think and tell others… thats how we learn and grow
wow!! I read the commentaries and i’m shocked to see how low some poeple can go…. Just be grown ups and respect the beleifs of others.. some beleive and god and some don’t, it’s their own choice… so if you can’t respect the opinion f others just keep yours to yourself….
How about stop believing scientist and start using your own brains to determine what you think because man cant predict the ending only the earth itself will determine when it will end and how. Never question gods reason for things because you know he knows best. Man is corrupted and has always been so lets be honest will you believe some scientist that thinks that technology is the answer to everything or yourself who’s opinion and thoughts matter more than anything else?
The word you are looking for is “allowed” not aloud.
It speaks volumes for the rest of your mumbo jumbo comment.
If you actually bothered to read some science and understood the rigour with which claims are examined then you would see a much more fascinating and revealing story, than the BS conspiracy and anti intellectual drivel which takes the place of knowledge in your brain.

There are magnetic fields and such that can be produced by the alignment. So even if the whole 2012 theory of something big happening is a bunch of bull, there are going to be some type of effects due to the alignment nonetheless.
The sun “aligning” to the centre of the galaxy is just a LINE OF SIGHT effect, it doesn’t actually DO ANYTHING.
Here’s a simple analogy – I could walk around a tree in my garden and make it “align” with some distant mountains. The 3 objects would be “aligned” (me , the tree, the mountain). But neither me nor the tree would be any closer, or more affected by, those distant mountains than at any other time in my “orbit” around the tree. The same applies to Earth – Sun – Centre of Galaxy.

Nope. Alignment is a LOCAL LINE OF SIGHT EFFECT.
